City Girl (1987) is quite an interesting piece, really. It captures the ups and downs of young love in a quite raw manner. Cora, played with a certain fragility, is thrust into the limelight through a beauty contest, which adds an interesting layer of societal commentary. The pacing feels deliberate, almost languid at times, allowing for moments of reflection amidst the drama that transpires. The interactions between Cora and Mark are filled with a kind of youthful uncertainty, while her dynamic with Roy, a dentist, brings a contrasting maturity. There’s a certain authenticity in the performances; they don’t shy away from the awkwardness that comes with relationships. Not a lot of flashy effects here, but the focus on character development holds it all together.
