Cecil B. DeMille's 'Cleopatra' (1934) is a fascinating piece of early cinema. It's loaded with lavish sets and costumes that scream opulence, and the practical effects, especially the extravagant court scenes, are something to admire for their time. The pacing is a bit uneven, but it captures the tumultuous relationships between Cleopatra, Caesar, and Mark Antony pretty well. The performances are quite theatrical, with Claudette Colbert bringing a unique blend of charm and cunning to the role of Cleopatra. It definitely has that classic Hollywood flair, but it’s also interesting to see how they portrayed historical figures with such dramatic flair. Not the most subtle film, but it has its own unique charm.
