Colony of the Dark is one of those quirky 90s horror sci-fi movies that really leans into its bizarre premise. The atmosphere is drenched in a sense of dread, with kind of a gritty, low-budget vibe that adds to its charm. Jim Mathews, played by a somewhat forgettable actor, goes through a wild transformation after getting hit with this serum, and man, the practical effects on his dismemberment are something else. They really went for it. The pacing is a bit uneven, but it keeps you engaged in the twisted story of revenge and transformation. The themes of betrayal and the repercussions of scientific hubris are pretty on point, considering the era. It's definitely a film that sticks in your mind, for better or worse.
