Cool Runnings is one of those films that balances humor and heart really well. The whole premise, a Jamaican bobsled team, is just so unique and makes for great storytelling. The pacing is pretty solid; it builds up nicely from the initial disqualification to their training. The performances, especially from John Candy as the washed-up coach, really anchor the film. You can feel the camaraderie forming among the team, and there’s something special about how it portrays overcoming obstacles. Plus, the practical effects during the bobsled runs have a certain charm that CGI just can’t replicate.
