Critical Condition is one of those offbeat comedies that has a peculiar charm. Eddie, played by the always engaging Richard Pryor, blunders into a mental hospital under the guise of a doctor, and the film plays with absurdity in a way that feels unrestrained. The pacing dips in parts but that gives it a quirky vibe, letting scenes breathe. It’s packed with physical comedy and some fun practical effects that add to the chaos. Michael Apted's direction is surprisingly tight given the wild premise. There's a certain 80s absurdity that pervades everything, and you can’t help but appreciate the mix of satire and slapstick, even if it doesn’t hit every note perfectly.
