Curse of the Mayans is an interesting blend of horror and sci-fi that plays into the archeological discovery trope but adds a twist. You have Danielle Noble, played by Carla Ortiz, diving deep into the underbelly of Mayan mythology. The atmosphere is heavy with dread, and you really feel the claustrophobia of the underwater sequences. The practical effects, while not groundbreaking, do have a raw charm that fits the film’s tone. The pacing has its lulls, but the build-up to the reveal of Xib'alb'a, the gates of hell, keeps you engaged. The performances, particularly Ortiz's, ground the film amidst some higher concept themes about knowledge and the unknown. Overall, it’s a unique watch if you're into niche horror that taps into ancient cultures.
