Danny and Nicky is quite an interesting watch, directed by Douglas Jackson. It contrasts the lives of two boys with Down syndrome—Danny, who has a home filled with familial warmth and the hustle of a special school, against Nicky, tucked away in a large institution. The documentary’s tone feels intimate, almost observational, giving you a real sense of their environments. You get a lot of raw emotion from the families, and the pacing really allows those moments to breathe. There’s no flashy editing or sensationalism here, just a genuine exploration of care and societal views towards disabilities. It’s this unvarnished look that sets it apart, makes you think, and perhaps question the systems we have in place.
