Darkness by Day is this eerie little horror flick that kicks off with a beach setting, which is kind of unusual for the genre. The mix of nature – cliffs and pine trees – creates this foreboding atmosphere right from the start. Virginia’s nightmare, featuring her cousin Anabel with that unsettlingly pale face and blood traces, sets a chilling tone. The pacing is a bit slow for some, but it really builds tension as the film unfolds. There’s an emphasis on practical effects that adds a raw quality to the scares, and while the performances might not be polished, they bring an unsettling realism that enhances the horror. It’s definitely one of those films that lingers in your mind long after watching.
