Death by 1000 Cuts is an interesting twist on the found footage subgenre. You have this horror vlogger, pretty typical in concept, but his descent into madness while lurking in this creepy house adds a certain rawness. The atmosphere is thick with tension – you really feel the claustrophobia of the space around him. The pacing is sort of uneven, but it works in building dread; it’s almost like you’re in it with him. Practical effects are decent, nothing over-the-top but they serve the story well. There’s a certain dullness to the performances that actually heightens the unsettling vibe. It’s a film that lingers, kind of like a cut that just won’t heal. You can see the ambition, even if it’s a bit rough around the edges.
