Death of an Undertaker is a curious blend of reality and narrative, captured over eight long years. It’s set in Leichhardt’s authentic funeral home, which adds an undeniable weight to the proceedings. The pace is deliberately slow, giving you time to sit with Sparrow, our main character who’s a part-timer grappling with his own demons. As he gears up for his first exhumation, the atmosphere grows increasingly tense, almost claustrophobic. The actual morticians deliver grounded performances that blur the line between actor and subject. The practical effects, though subtle, contribute significantly to the film's eeriness. Themes of mortality, mental fragility, and the everyday realities of death are explored in a way that feels refreshingly honest, if not a bit unsettling.
