So, 'Devout' really digs deep into the psyche of this young nun. There's this palpable tension throughout. It’s not just about the horror elements, though they’re there and pretty effective, but it really explores her inner turmoil with desire and faith. The atmosphere is heavy, claustrophobic almost, especially in the monastery setting. The practical effects are well done, lending a gritty realism to some of the more chilling moments. The pacing has this slow burn vibe, which I think works perfectly to ramp up the suspense. The performances are solid too; you can feel her struggle. There’s something distinctly unsettling about how it tackles themes of repression and guilt. It sticks with you.
