Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow is a curious blend of adventure and whimsy, with a touch of drama that's hard to resist. Set in the late 18th century, the film captures the essence of rural England, complete with its misty nights and moonlit rides. The vicar's transformation into the Scarecrow is executed with some charming practical effects that give it a unique visual flair for its time. The performances are solid, particularly by George Baker as the titular character, who balances the duality of his role quite well. The pacing meanders a bit in the second act, but it builds a nice atmosphere that reflects the tension of the time, especially with the looming threat of King George's taxmen. A nice little gem to have in any collection.
