Dracula, a Love Story (1980) is this curious blend of genres that tackles the familiar Dracula mythos from a surprisingly romantic angle. Count Dracula, or Vladimir as he calls himself now, hops over to Brazil to find his estranged son, Rafael. The pacing has this slow burn vibe, punctuated by moments of unexpected passion and tension. The atmosphere is thick with melodrama, which is fitting since it was intended as a telenovela. Practical effects are charmingly dated, but there's something endearing about the way they try to capture the supernatural without modern CGI. Notably, the performances are earnest, making the characters’ struggles feel almost relatable in their emotional weight. It’s distinctive, and not just because of the setting.
