Encounter (2016) is a low-key horror that leans heavily into its atmospheric tension. The film revolves around a newlywed couple, Ted and Lauren, who set up shop in an old farmhouse for their thesis on orbs. It's interesting how they use those cameras to capture what lurks in the shadows. The pacing is deliberate, allowing the unsettling sounds and ghostly happenings to really creep under your skin. And then there's that visceral moment when Ted discovers footage of a possessed Lauren wandering the fields, which really heightens the sense of dread. The practical effects are modest but effective, grounding the supernatural elements. The performances, particularly in the moments of mounting tension, lend a certain rawness that just feels authentic. It's an intriguing watch for those who appreciate the subtleties of horror.
Focus on themes of possession and isolation.Notice the use of practical effects over CGI.Pay attention to the sound design; it adds to the dread.
