Escalator Down is quite the character study, diving into the turbulent life of Jochen, a kid grappling with the fallout of his parents' divorce. The tension in his household with his mother and her boyfriend is palpable, and you can really feel Jochen's frustration as he spirals into petty theft—like that chocolate bar, which seems so trivial yet speaks volumes about his emotional state. The pacing is deliberately slow, allowing you to soak in the awkwardness and discomfort of Jochen's interactions, especially with Alex, his older classmate who seizes the moment. It's raw, unfiltered emotion, and the performances are pretty well-executed, capturing that sense of youthful despair and rebellion. Definitely has a distinct indie vibe that sets it apart.
