Even Dwarfs Started Small is one of those Herzog films that really takes you to a bizarre, unsettling place. It's got this dark humor that creeps in through the absurdity of the situations these characters find themselves in. The pacing is really interesting—sometimes it feels like it drags, which just adds to the dismal atmosphere of the asylum. The performances are raw and almost primal, capturing the frustrations and madness of the characters. You can definitely sense Herzog's trademark exploration of human nature here, but filtered through a lens of dark comedy. Also, the practical effects are uniquely offbeat, making the whole experience feel very tactile and real. It's a film that sticks with you, not always for the right reasons.
