Fall City, directed by an unknown but passionate filmmaker, has a raw, almost gritty feel. It’s set in this dreary little town during Christmas, which adds a nice contrast to Jon Price's journey. He’s a recently-paroled thief, and you feel that weight on him throughout the film. The pacing is a bit slow, but it allows you to soak in the atmospheric rain-soaked streets and the loneliness that permeates Jon's life. The chemistry between him and the single mother is genuine; their interactions feel real, almost like a slice of life. You can tell there’s a lot of heart here, and the performances hold it together, especially the way they explore themes of redemption and kindness. Not your typical holiday fare, but it brings its own charm.
