Family Happiness is an intriguing drama that captures a very raw and intimate exploration of love and loss. Masha, still young and vulnerable after her parents’ passing, finds herself in a complex relationship with her much older guardian, Sergei Mikhailovich. The tone is often somber, with a pacing that allows the characters’ emotional struggles to unfold gradually. There's an interesting juxtaposition of youthful hope against Sergei's more world-weary perspective, which creates a palpable tension throughout. The performances are quite layered, with both actors bringing depth to their characters. It's visually simple, but the atmosphere really draws you in, making it distinctively compelling, even if the subject matter can be quite heavy.
