Family Reconstruction is a rather unsettling exploration of familial bonds and the complexities of love. The film juxtaposes the tenderness of new relationships with the darker, almost taboo undercurrents that emerge when two families merge. Gwang-sik and Hae-ra's characters are portrayed with a mix of warmth and fragility, while their children, Myeong-ho and Dal-rae, traverse a confusing landscape of emotions—innocence clashing with burgeoning desires. The pacing might feel languid at times, but it allows for an immersive experience in their lives. The performances do a decent job conveying the awkwardness of their situation, and the subtlety of the direction, despite its unknown status, contributes to an overall atmosphere that's both intimate and disquieting.
