This 1991 flick blends fantasy and romance in a quirky way that’s hard to pin down. You have the comic book artist Shing, played by Tony Leung, whose creative struggles get a supernatural twist when he meets the ghost Ching-ching, portrayed by Joey Wang. There’s a chilliness to the atmosphere, especially with the ghostly interactions, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously, which makes it charming. The pacing is a bit uneven at times, oscillating between heartfelt moments and lighthearted comedy. The practical effects used for Ching-ching’s ghostly presence have a unique touch that feels refreshing compared to today’s CGI. Plus, Wang’s performance carries a certain allure that’s quite engaging. It’s a distinct entry in the genre for sure.
