Fear of Water is this raw, atmospheric drama set against the haunting backdrop of the Magdalen Islands. It opens with the disturbing discovery of Rosalie Richard’s body, and the pacing is deliberate, allowing the tension to build slowly. You get this palpable sense of dread throughout the film. The performances are quite striking, especially the portrayal of Sergeant André Surprenant as he grapples with the chaos that follows the murder. There's a deep exploration of the impact of violence on a seemingly peaceful community, and the way it disrupts the daily lives of the inhabitants is pretty compelling. Not much in terms of practical effects here, but the stark visuals and bleak landscapes really set the mood.
