Female Leopard is an interesting piece of 80s drama that plays with the notion of familial bonds twisted by obsession. The backdrop is this almost haunting rural setting, which contrasts sharply with the stark internal conflict of the characters. The pacing is deliberately slow, allowing the tension to simmer, and it’s filled with these intense, sometimes uncomfortable moments that really make you think. Kōyū Ohara’s direction captures the unsettling atmosphere perfectly, while the performances, especially from the lead, are raw and compelling. It doesn’t shy away from the darker themes of desire and madness, which gives it a distinctive edge. There’s something about the practical effects that adds to its raw charm, too.
