So, 'Fire in the Heartland' is something else. It captures this raw wave of student activism at Kent State during a particularly tumultuous time in America. The pacing is quite reflective, letting the audience absorb the weight of the events leading up to that tragic day in May 1970. Daniel Miller does a great job blending archival footage with personal testimonies, which really adds depth. The tension of the protests, the atmosphere of fear and urgency—it’s palpable. You feel the frustration of these young students questioning authority, racism, and the Vietnam War. The performances, if you can call them that, from those recounting their experiences, are hauntingly real. It's a film that sticks with you, and not in an easy way.
