Fishing Master is an interesting slice of life, really. The pacing has this almost meditative quality as it unfolds Rei Kurokami's journey. You get drawn into his world, his relationship with the lake and its fading ecosystem. The atmosphere is thick with a sense of nostalgia for nature's untouched beauty. I found the performances to be quite genuine, particularly the way Rei embodies the struggle of the fisherman while also addressing larger environmental themes. It’s not your typical fishing movie; there’s a depth to it. The practical effects used for the fishing scenes are surprisingly well done too, adding a layer of realism that’s refreshing. It's distinctive in how it tackles a man's personal battle with nature and industry, rather than just serving up a sport-centric narrative.
