Forty Thieves (1944) directed by Lesley Selander is one of those Westerns that embodies the grit and tension of the genre without trying to reinvent the wheel. The plot revolves around Hoppy's struggle against the newly-appointed sheriff Jerry Doyle, who’s more puppet than lawman. It’s got some solid pacing; the tension builds nicely as Hoppy faces off against Tad Hammond's gang of forty gunslingers. The performances are pretty engaging, especially with Hoppy's determination shining through. The dust and grit of the Old West are palpable here, and the practical effects during the shootouts add a level of authenticity that's often lacking in more modern takes. It's a straightforward story, but there's a certain charm to how it unfolds.
