Fresh Produce, a 2000 drama set in late 19th century Bavaria, definitely has this gritty realism to it. You feel the weight of Zilli's struggles—she's a waitress who gets caught in this tumultuous situation with a young priest, Michel. The atmosphere is heavy, almost suffocating. The pacing drags a bit in the middle, but it adds to the feeling of despair. The themes of desperation and societal pressure are palpable. What stands out, though, are the raw performances; the actress really embodies Zilli's turmoil. And the practical effects, especially in the scenes depicting her flight to Munich, are hauntingly effective. It’s not your run-of-the-mill TV movie, that’s for sure.
