Gates of Hell (1995) is one of those gritty thrillers that really taps into the underbelly of San Francisco. The atmosphere is thick with tension as we follow a husband on this desperate search for his wife, who’s been thrust into a nightmare. The pacing is relentless, keeping you on edge as he navigates through some dark corners of the city. The themes of desperation and the fight against an unseen enemy are palpable. The performances, especially from the leads, are raw and really sell the emotional weight of the situation. Practical effects are used effectively, adding to the film's unsettling vibe. It’s not the typical honeymoon tale, that's for sure. More of a journey through hell, literally and figuratively.
