Giant is a sprawling epic that really captures the essence of Texas in the mid-20th century. George Stevens took his time with this one, letting the characters breathe and the themes of wealth, race, and land seep in. The performances are noteworthy—Elizabeth Taylor shines as Leslie, caught between two very different worlds, while Rock Hudson and James Dean are both captivating in their roles. The cinematography does a fantastic job of showcasing the vast Texas landscape, and the way it intertwines with the characters’ lives is something special. Plus, the use of practical effects, especially during the oil discovery scenes, gives it a raw authenticity that modern films sometimes lack. It’s a long watch, but it’s got depth and richness that rewards patience.
