God's Country is this fascinating document from Louis Malle that captures a moment in time, you know? Filmed in a Minnesota farming town, it starts off with this vibrant sense of community and life. It's almost idyllic, really. But then you see the follow-up six years later, and wow, what a shift. The economic decline is stark, and Malle does an incredible job of juxtaposing those two realities. The pacing feels deliberate, almost meditative, allowing the viewer to soak in the changes. It's all about the impact of political shifts, and the practical effects are just the lives of real people, raw and authentic. You can't help but feel the weight of it all, and the performances are just life as it is.
