Godzilla 1985, or The Return of Godzilla as it originally hit Japan, is a fascinating entry in the franchise. Directed by Koji Hashimoto, it carries this heavy, ominous atmosphere throughout, very unlike some of the campier entries that followed. The pacing's pretty tight, pulling you into the chaos of Godzilla’s rampage without much fuss. The practical effects, while showing their age, have a certain charm – there's something about the man-in-suit performances that feels raw and visceral. Raymond Burr’s return adds a layer of continuity, giving it this nice link to the original. It’s a refreshingly serious take that dives into themes of humanity’s hubris and disaster, making it stand apart in the series.
