Gone with the Bullets is quite an interesting blend of genres, really. The film, set against the vibrant backdrop of 1920s Shanghai, takes you into this chaotic beauty pageant world. It has this unique tone where the action and comedy mix unexpectedly with darker themes. Ma Zouri and Xiang Feitian’s characters are well-crafted, and their dynamic adds a layer of depth. The pacing can feel a bit uneven at times, but it kind of works with the chaotic atmosphere they’re portraying. The tragic turn when Wanyan Ying wins is shocking, and it really pushes the narrative forward. Plus, the practical effects give a genuine feel to the lavish settings and costumes. A distinctive flick just for its audacity, really.
