Groper Train: The Temptation of a Mourning Wife dives into some pretty uncomfortable territory, exploring themes of loneliness and desperation. Takumi, our protagonist, is a wandering soul navigating both job loss and an emotionally frigid relationship with Sanae. The film's pacing is definitely uneven, which reflects the chaotic mindset of Takumi as he grapples with his fixation on groping as a means of connection. Kazuyoshi Sekine’s direction captures this unsettling atmosphere, especially in crowded train scenes where the tension is palpable. The practical effects—or lack thereof—heighten the rawness of the experiences portrayed. Performances are a mixed bag, but there's something refreshingly candid about the way the characters are presented. It's distinct, to say the least, and not your typical romantic drama. Just be prepared for the awkwardness.
