Grumpy Old Men is a solid mix of comedy and a touch of romance, but it’s really about the rivalry between two old coots, played by Matthau and Lemmon. Their banter feels lived-in, like they’ve been at it for years – and they have, practically. The film captures that small-town vibe perfectly, with some great winter scenery adding to the atmosphere. There’s something charmingly juvenile about their pranks, which makes the whole feud feel light-hearted, even as it digs into themes of friendship and aging. The chemistry between the leads is what really drives it, though; they manage to bring depth to characters that could have easily been one-note. Plus, Ann-Margret adds an interesting twist to their dynamic. It’s just a fun watch.
