Gung Ho (1986) is a fascinating mix of comedy and drama, really capturing the clash of cultures in the auto industry. Ron Howard directs with a light touch, but you can feel the underlying tension between the American workers and their new Japanese bosses. Michael Keaton plays Hunt, and he’s got this frenetic energy that drives the film forward. The pacing feels a bit uneven in parts, but it captures that awkwardness of new beginnings and cultural misunderstandings. The way the Japanese plant manager tries to bridge the gap is both humorous and revealing of deeper issues. There’s this great atmosphere of both hope and frustration throughout, making it interesting to watch, especially for anyone into workplace dynamics.
