Gypsy (1993) is a curious blend of comedy and drama, with a hearty dose of music that gives it a lively, if sometimes chaotic, feel. Directed by Emile Ardolino, the film dives into the world of show business through the eyes of Rose, a mother whose relentless ambition for her daughters shapes their lives. Bette Midler’s performance as Rose is something to behold—full of fire and vulnerability that really captures the tumultuous mother-daughter dynamic. The pacing can feel a bit uneven, but it complements the chaotic atmosphere of vaudeville. The musical numbers, especially Louise’s transformation into Gypsy Rose Lee, are well-staged, with a raw energy that you don’t often see in more polished productions. It’s all a bit messy, but that’s part of its charm.
