Hail the Judge is a quirky blend of courtroom comedy and social satire. Pao Lung Sing, the main character, is this hilariously corrupt judge whose character arc takes quite the turn when he starts to care about justice—specifically for Chi Siu-Lin, a woman caught in a web of deceit. The pacing has a nice ebb and flow; it bounces between slapstick humor and some surprisingly serious moments. The practical effects and set pieces, while not groundbreaking, do add a certain charm to the film. Performances are over-the-top, yet they work in the context of the narrative. It’s definitely a film that plays with themes of morality and redemption while keeping things light and entertaining.
