Halfway is this understated high school drama that really leans into the complex emotions of first love and impending separation. The pacing has a languid quality, allowing you to really feel the weight of Hiro's anxiety over Shu leaving for Tokyo. There's a lot of subtlety in the performances; the actors convey so much with just glances and pauses. The atmosphere is quietly tense, almost nostalgic, and it captures that bittersweet feeling of teenage romance perfectly. The choices made in practical effects are minimal but effective, grounding the story in a relatable reality. It’s not flashy, but there’s a rawness that makes you reflect on those transitional moments in life, you know? Definitely a film that lingers with you after the credits roll.
