Hallowed is one of those under-the-radar horror flicks that really delves into the psyche of its main character, Gabriel. The trauma he endures as a child shapes his twisted worldview, and the film does a decent job of building that unsettling atmosphere. The pacing is a bit uneven, but it adds to the overall sense of dread. I mean, you can feel the tension simmering as Gabriel hunts his victims, all while wrapped in this delusion of divine purpose. The practical effects are fairly solid for a low-budget film, lending a gritty realism to the violence. Performances, especially from the lead, carry a weight that draws you into his madness. It’s distinct for how it explores faith and insanity, in a way that feels very personal, almost haunting.
