So, Hammer is set in Cartagena back in 1666, and it’s got this really dark, oppressive atmosphere that pulls you in right away. The story revolves around an enslaved woman who, while locked up in the Palace of the Inquisition, gets entangled with some really evil forces and a deal that’s not exactly a walk in the park. What I found striking were the practical effects—they add this gritty authenticity that’s often lost in modern horror. The pacing is deliberate, almost suffocating at times, which really enhances the dread. Themes of power, sacrifice, and the supernatural weave through it all, creating a palpable tension. The performances, especially from the lead, really dive deep into the psychological horror of her situation. Quite the unique piece.
