Handel's Tamerlano, directed by Pierre Audi, is quite an intriguing piece from 2015. The whole production has this stark elegance, really minimalistic staging that pulls you into the emotional core of the story. It’s fascinating how Handel broke conventions, particularly by featuring a mature tenor—this was a bold choice at the time, given the dominance of the castrato style. The themes are pretty dark too, including moments that deal with suicide, which makes it stand out against other operas of the period. The pacing flows well, allowing the music to breathe while highlighting the intense performances from the cast, making it a unique exploration of power and despair.
