Hard Times, directed by Walter Hill, really nails that gritty atmosphere of the Depression-era. With Charles Bronson as Chaney, the strong silent type, you get this raw, unfiltered portrayal of street fighting that feels visceral. The pacing is deliberate, letting moments linger, which adds to the tension of the no-holds-barred bouts. James Coburn as Speed brings a nice contrast with his slick but ultimately flawed character; he’s a promoter who's just trying to make a quick buck, and he drags Chaney into his messy world. The fight scenes are practical and grounded—no flashy tricks, just tough men going at it. The film’s themes of survival and the human condition in tough times come across quite strongly, making it not just another action flick, but something a bit deeper.
