Harlem Nights is a curious mix of comedy and crime, with a unique vibe that’s hard to pin down. Eddie Murphy directs and stars, bringing a certain flair that’s unmistakable. The film is set in the 1920s, and the atmosphere is drenched in Art Deco style, which is fun to see amidst the chaos of gangsters and crooked cops. The pacing can feel a bit uneven at times, but the camaraderie among the cast is infectious. Richard Pryor’s performance is particularly noteworthy; he and Murphy have a great rapport. The dialogue has a clever snappiness to it, making for some memorable exchanges. It’s definitely not your average comedy, leaning into darker themes while still maintaining that playful edge.
