Harpies (2007) is a curious blend of adventure, fantasy, and sci-fi that doesn’t stick to the usual formula. You’ve got Jason Avery, an ex-cop turned museum security guard, trying to hold it all together as armed thieves break in. The heist narrative brings a nice tension, but it’s the scientist’s obsession with the obelisk that really drives the story. There’s something almost kitschy about the way the harpies are brought to life with practical effects, which gives it a unique charm. The pacing can be a bit uneven, but there’s an underlying theme of power and control that keeps you engaged. Plus, the performances have a certain earnestness that feels refreshing amidst the chaos.
