Hatchet III continues the chaotic legacy of Victor Crowley with its blend of campy horror and dark humor. BJ McDonnell, who worked on previous installments, manages to keep that gritty, swampy atmosphere alive. The practical effects are a standout here, with some impressively gruesome kills that feel satisfyingly tactile rather than CGI-heavy. You can tell they had fun with it, and the pacing doesn’t let up much—there’s plenty of mayhem to keep you engaged. Danielle Harris returns as Marybeth, bringing a mix of badassery and vulnerability to the role. The film doesn’t shy away from the lore of the Crowley curse, adding some depth to the insanity. If you enjoy a good slasher with a self-aware tone, this one holds its own in the trilogy.
Released on DVD and Blu-ray in 2013.Practical effects by the renowned effects artist, Greg Nicotero.Shot on location in Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp.Features a score by composer floating around horror's usual synth sounds.
