Hemet, or the Landlady Don't Drink Tea has this odd mix of dark humor and unsettling horror wrapped in a crime narrative. Tony Olmos really leans into that gritty California vibe, with a landlady who's both tyrant and puppet master. The atmosphere is thick with paranoia, thanks to some clever practical effects that make the bath salts epidemic feel uncomfortably real. The pacing is offbeat, like it can't quite decide if it wants to be a zany comedy or something more sinister, making it distinctive, for sure. Performances are raw, especially from the landlady, who chews up the scenery in a way that’s both hilarious and chilling. Definitely not your regular horror fare.
