Herrat tÀysihoidossa, directed by Risto Orko in '33, has this quirky charm. You get to see Toivo and Unto, these penniless students, navigate their way through life at a boarding school. The humor is a bit slapstick but carries that old-school Finnish vibe. Toivo's crush on Aune, the niece of the late Mrs. Andersson, is sweetly awkward, and the rivalry with the flamboyant opera singer adds a layer of absurdity. The pacing is leisurely, giving you time to soak in the boarding school antics, and the performances are delightfully earnest. Not a lot of high production values here, but it's that rawness that gives it character. You really feel the era it was made in.
