Hic Habitat Felicitas is one of those curious documentaries that digs into the intersections of sexuality and colonialism, and it does so in a really unusual way. The atmosphere feels raw and almost dreamlike, thanks to the old recordings interspersed throughout. You’ve got this European traveler, Mathias, who disrupts the mundane lives of people in a coastal town. The pacing is unhurried, allowing you to really absorb the weight of the historical context. The practical effects are minimal but effective, really highlighting the starkness of the environment. It’s a film that’s deeply reflective, but also asks some pointed questions about desire and power without being overly didactic. Definitely a unique piece that lingers long after viewing.
