Hoi Polloi, directed by Del Lord in '35, is a fascinating romp through class and chaos. The premise is simple – a professor believes he can refine the Three Stooges into gentlemen, but the hilarity comes from their relentless inability to conform. The pacing is brisk, and the slapstick timing is impeccable, with each gag layered on top of the last. The party scene is a standout, where the Stooges' attempts at etiquette unravel in a delightful burst of mayhem. It’s really interesting to see how the societal norms of the time are flipped and how the so-called highbrow guests eventually mirror the Stooges' antics. The performances are, of course, classic Stooge – physical and wildly expressive, adding a unique charm to the whole affair.
