Home Sweet Home is one of those oddball slasher flicks that sort of gets lost in the shuffle of early '80s horror. The film has this gritty, almost unsettling atmosphere, enhanced by its low-budget look. It moves at a pretty brisk pace, which keeps you on edge, especially when the escaped mental patient crashes the Thanksgiving scene. There's something unsettling about the juxtaposition of holiday cheer and impending doom, plus the practical effects have that raw quality you don’t see much these days. The performances can be a bit uneven, but they add to the film's charm, really. It’s not going to redefine the genre, but it definitely has its own character that makes it stand out in a sea of slashers from that era.
