Hounds of Zaroff (2016) throws you into a nightmarish scenario right from the start. This film does a decent job of building tension as Rachel, the protagonist, wakes up bewildered on an eerie island. The pacing is relentless, with each moment soaked in a palpable sense of dread. The character of Zaroff, a deranged Russian game hunter, embodies a twisted version of the hunter-prey dynamic, which gives the film a chilling undercurrent. Practical effects are utilized well, enhancing the visceral experience rather than relying solely on CGI. The performances are solid, especially from the lead, who conveys desperation and grit. You can feel the atmosphere thickening with each encounter, making it a distinct entry in the low-budget horror genre.
